Ageing is inevitable. And whilst it’s a process we shouldn’t fear, it is one we can turn the clock back on.
In 2024, we’re on a mission to help you achieve your best skin. Last week, we delved into the best treatments for acne. And this week, we’ve explored the best anti aging treatments for youthful skin.
But first, let’s delve into the science that means we age in the first place!
What Happens To Our Skin As We Age?
Facial ageing happens in a three dimensional process involving bone, soft tissue and skin. Whilst each layer has its own unique ageing processes, the structures of the deeper layers impact one another.
We’re about to get scienc-y, so bear with us. First, let’s focus on our bones!
From the age of 40, our facial bones recede. In turn, this impacts the overlying soft tissue, resulting in a reduction of chin projection, an increase in mandibular angle and midrange bone remodelling. These bone changes are paired with shifts in our fat compartments. Deep fat is firmly anchored to the underlying bone, helping to provide contour, support of overlying fat compartments and a gliding plane for muscle movement. Superficial fat compartments, however, are more mobile. This means they are subject to both the resting and dynamic tension of the mimetic muscles.
In the soft tissue, fat pad repositioning then tends to occur in the periorbital, midface and lower jaw area. This increases hollows in the cheeks and flattens angles of the face. Likewise, it contributes to the hollowing of the temple. It is this fat pad repositioning that causes those deep folds that we all seem to hate - naso-labial fold marionette lines.
A result of repetitive muscle contraction from speaking, laughing and eating, superficial and deep dynamic wrinkles also begin to appear.
Finally, on to our skin! The resilience of the skin resides primarily in the dermis - the layer composed of collagen that contributes to strength, elastin that contributes to elasticity and glycosaminoglycans that play a key role in skin hydration. From the age of 20, the rate of collagen breakdown increases by 1% each year. On the other hand, the rate of collagen synthesis decreases.
By middle age, elastin biosynthesis will have declined steeply and elastin will have been lost through natural degradation. As a result, static and dynamic wrinkles replace suppleness.
What Anti Ageing Treatments Do We Provide At Sorella?
Whilst the ageing process can’t be stopped, premature ageing can be avoided. At our medical aesthetic clinic in Kent, here are some of our favourite anti ageing treatments.
CellDerma Skincare
If you haven’t heard us rave about CellDerma before, have you been living under a rock? Clinically proven to rapidly enhance skin health, the brand was founded by Dr Dev Patel - an award-winning aesthetic doctor.
Focused on simplicity, CellDerma achieves results with just one or two targeted products. For anti ageing, we love the GF5 Bio-Regenerative Growth Serum or RETIN-ACE Retinoid Night Serum. You can buy the CellDerma range in our clinic or via their website using a unique Sorella Aesthetic code.
Polynucleotides
Polynucleotides are one of the most effective anti ageing treatments for youthful skin! The revolutionary injectable bio-stimulator is made to mirror the human DNA which stimulates our own cells to replace molecules we lose as we age. It can boost collagen and elastin by up-regulating the fibroblast cells, and improve tissue regeneration, skin tone and elasticity.
Polynucleotides also have an antioxidant and hydrating effect. This results in skin that doesn’t just look healthier, but is healthier.
Deep & Mid Depth Dermal Filler
One of the most renowned anti ageing treatments is dermal filler. But it must be administered in the right place for optimal results! At Sorella, our full face rejuvenation expert Nurse Georgi likes to concentrate on structural support for deep fat pads and midface volumity.
Skinade Supplements
Finally, the supplementation of collagen is essential to reducing signs of and combating ageing. At our skin clinic in Ashford, we’re proud to partner with Skinade. This advanced formulation is assimilated at a 95% absorption rate - a level that can never be matched with counter-bought supplements or powders.
Wondering how it works? The magic formula uses peptides to stimulate our own collagen production. It’s all in the science!
Can Lifestyle Changes Reverse The Signs Of Ageing?
Beyond skincare and aesthetic anti ageing treatments, there are several steps you can take to slow the facial ageing process at home. The earlier you start, the better the results! But even if you’ve already started to notice those pesky fine lines, these preventative measures can help you slow the progression.
Eat a balanced diet, rich in antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. Sugary foods tend to degrade the elastin and collagen in your skin; but you don’t have to give them up completely.
Avoid direct sunlight and always wear sunscreen. The main cause of premature ageing is sun exposure. But by using a broad spectrum 50+ SPF, you can ensure that your skin is shielded.
Stop smoking. Toxins in cigarettes chronically deprive the skin of oxygen and nutrients. This is why a smoker's skin tends to sag and discolour sooner.
Drink plenty of water. Your skin needs moisture, so to keep it supple make sure you’re drinking at least 2 litres of water per day.
Our ‘New Year New Skin’ campaign is dedicated to helping you overcome your skin concerns. If you’d like to learn more about one of our anti ageing treatments for youthful skin, contact Sorella Aesthetics today. We can help you rejuvenate your skin, and gain back your confidence.
Don't forget! You're invited to our exclusive event on 4th February where you can enjoy live demos, freebies, brunch and fizz.
