Thinking about CO2 laser resurfacing, but worried about the recovery? You’re definitely not alone.
One of the biggest concerns we hear about CO2 laser isn’t actually the treatment itself - it’s the downtime afterwards. A lot of people picture severe peeling, weeks hidden indoors or red-raw skin for months.
And honestly? There’s still a lot of outdated information online that makes CO2 laser recovery sound far more dramatic than it usually is.
The truth is, CO2 laser resurfacing does involve downtime. It’s not a lunchtime facial, and we’d never pretend otherwise. But for most people, recovery is much more manageable than they expect - especially when you know what’s normal and your treatment is carried out properly.

What Is CO2 Laser?
If you’re new to CO2 laser resurfacing, here’s a quick overview before we get into the recovery side of things.
CO2 laser resurfacing is a medical-grade skin treatment that uses a carbon dioxide laser to remove damaged surface layers while stimulating collagen production deeper within.
It’s designed to improve overall skin quality, helping concerns like acne scarring, uneven texture, fine lines, pigmentation and sun damage.
If you want the full breakdown of how CO2 laser works, what it treats, how the treatment feels and whether it’s right for your skin, we’ve already written a complete guide which you can read here.
What Is CO2 Laser Recover Actually Like?
Straight after treatment, your skin will feel hot, tight and sensitive - very similar to moderate sunburn.
Most people don’t describe the recovery as painful. It’s usually more a feeling of heat, dryness and tightness while the skin heals.
You may also experience swelling, particularly around the eyes, and your skin can feel rough or textured over the first few days. This is all part of the normal healing process.
It’s also important to remember that everybody heals differently. Your CO2 laser recovery will depend on things like -
The intensity of your treatment
The area being treated
Your skin type
Your body’s healing response
How well aftercare is followed
CO2 Laser Recovery Day By Day
One of the biggest misconceptions about CO2 laser resurfacing is that recovery is unpredictable.
In reality, healing tends to follow a very consistent pattern.
Day 1 - Redness, Heat & Swelling
At first, your skin will look red and feel hot. As the day goes on, swelling can start to develop, particularly around delicate areas like the eyes. Your skin may also feel tight, shiny and slightly puffy.
This is usually the stage where people panic the most, but it’s also completely expected.
Cooling the skin, keeping hydrated and sleeping slightly elevated can all help minimise swelling during the first 24 hours.
Day 2-3 - Tightness & Dryness
Over the next couple of days, redness usually continues and the skin often starts to darken or bronze slightly.
This can catch people off guard, but it’s a completely normal part of CO2 laser recovery. It doesn’t mean your skin is burned or damaged. It’s simply the treated skin beginning to dry and renew itself.
Swelling often starts to settle around this point too.
Day 3-5 - Peeling Begins
This is usually when the peeling stage becomes more noticeable.
The old, damaged skin starts naturally shedding away while fresh new skin develops underneath. Despite what people often imagine, this usually isn’t dramatic sheets of skin peeling off all at once.
Instead, it tends to look more like flaking, dryness and texture.
The most important thing during this stage is not to pick or force the skin off. Letting the skin shed naturally supports better healing and results.
Underneath, you’ll start noticing newer skin appearing pinker, fresher and smoother.
Day 5-7 - Improvement Becomes Visible
By the end of the first week, most people feel they’ve turned a corner.
Peeling usually settles significantly, redness starts reducing and the skin already begins looking clearer and smoother.
This is why the idea that you’ll need to 'hide away for weeks' often isn’t true. While everyone heals differently, most of the intensive downtime tends to happen within the first 5-7 days.
Week 2-4 - The Skin Keeps Rebuilding
One thing many people don’t realise is that healing on the surface happens much faster than healing underneath.
Even once the peeling stage has finished, your skin is still actively rebuilding collagen and repairing itself deeper within the dermis.
Over the following weeks, you’ll usually notice -
Brighter skin
Smoother texture
Softer lines
Improved clarity
Firmer-looking skin
Reduced appearance of pores and scarring
Some mild pinkness can still linger for several weeks, especially in fairer skin tones, but this gradually fades as the skin continues settling.

When Will I See Full CO2 Laser Improvements?
This is probably one of the most important things to understand about CO2 laser recovery - the final results don’t appear overnight.
While your skin may already look fresher once peeling settles, the deeper improvements continue developing for months afterwards.
Once the surface heals, you'll notice a brighter complexion, smoother-feeling skin and a fresher overall appearance.
Then, in the following 4-6 weeks, more noticeable changes start appearing in skin texture, acne scarring, pigmentation, fine lines and pore visibility.
Around 3 months, collagen remodelling is well underway and the skin often appears stronger, firmer, smoother and more even overall.
The Biggest Myths About CO2 Laser Recovery
There’s a lot of fear around laser recovery, and honestly, much of it comes from misinformation.
While CO2 laser resurfacing absolutely does involve downtime, many of the things people worry about simply aren’t true - especially when the treatment is carried out properly and the skin is supported correctly afterwards.
"You'll Be Hiding Away For Weeks"
For most people, the main downtime is usually around 5-7 days. You may still have some residual pinkness afterwards, but it’s rarely the severe, prolonged recovery people expect.
"CO2 Laser Thins Your Skin"
Actually, the opposite is true. CO2 laser stimulates collagen and strengthens skin structure over time, which is one of the reasons it’s so effective for texture, scarring and ageing concerns.
"The More You Peel, The Better The Results"
Not necessarily. Everybody heals differently, and heavier peeling doesn’t automatically mean a better outcome.
"Redness Means Something Has Gone Wrong"
Pinkness is a completely normal part of the healing process and can last several weeks depending on your skin and treatment intensity.
How To Support Better CO2 Laser Recovery
A big part of how smoothly your CO2 laser recovery goes comes down to aftercare. Looking after your skin properly helps support healing, minimise irritation and protect your final results.
Some of the most important aftercare protocols are -
Keeping the skin hydrated - Your skin will naturally feel dry and tight during recovery, so keeping it well hydrated is essential. Using the recommended products helps support your skin barrier while making the healing process much more comfortable.
Avoiding picking or exfoliating - As tempting as it can be, peeling skin should never be forced off. Picking can interrupt the healing process, increase irritation and potentially affect your final results.
Wearing SPF daily - Your skin will be much more sensitive to UV exposure while healing. Daily SPF is essential to protect your skin and help prevent unwanted pigmentation after treatment.
Avoiding excessive heat and sun exposure - Things like hot showers, saunas, intense exercise and direct sun exposure can aggravate the skin during the early stages of recovery. Giving your skin a calmer environment to heal in really helps.
Being patient with the process - This is probably the hardest part. While the surface healing happens relatively quickly, the deeper collagen rebuilding takes time. The best results develop gradually over the following weeks and months.

Is CO2 Laser Recovery Worth It?
For most, absolutely! CO2 laser resurfacing isn’t the kind of treatment that gives you a quick glow for a weekend before your skin returns to normal a few days later. It works much deeper than that. The goal is to genuinely improve the quality, strength and structure of your skin over time by stimulating collagen remodelling and encouraging healthier skin regeneration.
That’s why it can be so transformative for concerns that are often difficult to improve with more superficial treatments alone, like acne scarring, uneven texture, sun damage, fine lines, enlarged pores and skin laxity.
And while the downtime can feel like a big commitment beforehand, most people say the results make it more than worthwhile. Once the healing phase passes and the skin starts revealing those smoother, clearer and firmer results, it’s easy to understand why CO2 laser is considered one of the gold-standard skin treatments.
